What’s inside a Field Hockey Ball?

– Alright, welcome back,
I’m Dan and this is Lincoln. Today we’re gonna cut
open a field hockey ball. So, thank you to our YouTube subscribers that recommended this, this is, it turns out this one of
the oldest recorded sports, dating back to 200 BC. This is a game that’s
played indoor or outdoor, and they take this ball and
hit it around with sticks, kind of like ice hockey, but it’s indoor or outdoor on regular turf. So, if you look at this ball, It’s a Harrow brand, I guess. There’s some of the recommendations. It looks like it’s a legitimate
ball for high school. The NFHS is the National
High School Standards Board, and then FIH, it meets that, which is the field hockey board I guess. It looks like it just
has some putty on here that’s holding it together, so I think it’s gonna cut fairly easy. When we bought it, we got the colorful one because it looked like
it would be more fun. Okay, let’s cut it right
down the middle there. (saw spinning) Alright, let’s try that again (laughing). That is a tough one. I gotta push it a little
harder, okay, ready? (saw spinning) Alright, pull it up here. – [Lincoln] Thanks. – Alright, we didn’t get
very far with this one. I have another blade
that I can put on this. This blade is mostly cut, used for metal. We’re going to have to change that out, and we’ll give it a
try a little bit later. We cut open a bowling ball,
so we’re a little dusty. And then we changed the blade, so this blade should do a
better job at cutting this ball. So, let’s continue where we were at. – [Lincoln] Okay.
– [Dan] Lincoln, scoot back a little bit. Hopefully this stick will hold it. Here we go. You got it on there? Let’s do it. (saw spinning) (laughing) – [Lincoln] What happened? – [Dan] That’s not good. Look at that, it shot right into it. – [Woman] Can we get it out? (laughing) – [Dan] Well. Looks like we’re going
to need to figure out a new way to do this
one, because right now that’s not working. Alright, we just took it out. It got eaten alive by that saw. Here you go, you hold that. – [Lincoln] What?! It’s hard, the things are hard. – [Dan] Yeah, it’s plastic, it’s like
chopped up plastic. – [Lincoln] Wax. (slow motion) – That was pretty crazy,
so we’re going to try a safer way, right Lincoln? – Do it in the clamp in the saw. – Clamp in the saw, this is what we use for pretty much all our videos so far. – Just not the bowling ball. – Yeah, not the bowling
ball or the hockey puck, but most of the videos
we’ve been using this regular $3.00 saw from Ace
Hardware and this little clamp. We’ll get it cut and see if
the third time will work. (sawing) Man, that’s a tough ball. – Look at all that brown stuff. – [Dan] I know, I think
it’s like a cork inside. Like cork material like
you put on bottles. (sawing) I think I’m like halfway through. (sawing) – [Lincoln] On that part? – [Dan] Mm hm. (banging) Ahhh! We’re almost there. You ready? – One more! Dad, I want to take it. Can I take it off? – [Dan] Alright, here, grab it. Hold that tight. (cheering) – Whoa! That is… Awesome.
– [Dan] Smells like dog food. Doesn’t it? Doesn’t that stink? – [Little girl] I smell garlic. – And it’s hot right here, too. – Let me feel, I want to feel. – There we go, what
the heck is that stuff? Is it just some cork? Yeah?
– [Lincoln] Gross. – [Dan] Does it look like just cork? – [Woman] Yeah, I think so. – [Little girl] Can I smell?
– [Dan] Look at that. Alright, so what do you think, kids? – That is not what I
expected to be inside of it. – [Dan] It’s so hard, I’m just surprised. – I thought it would be solid. Like it kind of looked
like it in the outside, but it would be white in the middle but hard like the outside. – [Dan] Here, let’s look and see. Let’s take a fork to
and see how soft it is. It’s pretty hard, it just looks, it doesn’t look as hard because I cut it. But, see that? Yeah, it’s just this cork material. Alright, so out of the maybe
20 things that we’ve cut open, I think this was the most challenging. It took us three different
tries, we almost broke a hundred dollar saw and
almost got damaged ourselves by that thing exploding. But, very interesting,
thanks for your suggestion whoever recommended
this field hockey ball. It was very interesting, so if you have any other suggestions, please let us know. We’re really enjoying cutting things open. Thanks for watching.

I've learned something interesting at a umpire course 1 week ago that smooth balls are made for indoor and the dimple balls are made for both grass and astro. Please don't argue I'm just sharing what I was taught. Thanks.

This is not a real hockey ball. You should get a proper hockey ball and maybe do a special video like you did with how ridiculous but do it with some international hockey players like Maddie hinch

I think FIH stands for Federation of International Hockey. The word field is only for those who don't know Hockey as they're primarily or only familiar with ice hockey.

I love feild hockey i play it and to know what it is inside is amazing. Also the fact that it hurts so much is clearly because it is rock solid.

I'm mad because i was hoping that the ball would be pretty and cut cleanly through the middle but I was wrong.

This is an indoor hockey ball, an outdoor one has a harder material on the outside and is hollow on the inside

You shouldn’t have picked a high school one. You mentioned the putty in the beginning. That was because it was cut in half, filled with stuff so it wouldn’t fly high, then put back together. Real ones are hollow.

I'm a Field Hockey player myself, i don't know if it's because i'm argentinean or something, balls at my club are all hollow, we break a couple of those by month, pretty much we hit 100+ kph balls (we measured it) so on impact they get destroyed, also our sticks suffer some damage after months of use (personally i change mines every 6 months, and they are not cheap, 90% carbon fiber, 5% Kevlar, 5% aramid)

One time my coach was throwing the ball and I ran to receive it but I ran too far and it almost fractured my thumb. This was during late fall and fellow field hockey players know how much it hurts depending on the temperature.

Match balls for field hockey are hollow. The one you cut down there, is a practice ball. Which is little bit heavier than match ball but match ball is harder.

Also some people are confusing field hockey with street hockey. Not a same sport, not a same ball and not same sticks.

Fun fact :- Field Hockey players record fastest swing speeds among all sports including baseball, cricket, hurling and lacrosse.

That is an indoor ball it isn’t hollow so it stays on the ground outdoor balls are harder and are hollow
