Joel Grimes – Master of Illusions

For many years I defined myself as a photographer
and I had to work within sort of the boundaries that definition puts forth, but photography
is not reality, it is a representation of reality. Really, I view myself as an artist,
and I have the ability to pick and choose what I want to render. If you look at my work, it has a touch of
reality and a touch of fantasy. I want to make my subjects look like super heroes. I
let my intuition tell me when I’ve got the right look or the right feel. It’s the creative
process that takes over that really makes a photograph pop. To me lighting is paramount, and most of the
lighting techniques I have today are due to the process of experimenting. And trial and
error. Because you follow your intuition and you start building their look that fits your
vision as an artist. I want someone to look at my photograph and
say, “This is something that makes a statement and provokes some kind of emotion,” but in
the end the single most important thing when I create an image is do I like it, is it for
me. The need to create is built into my very DNA.
I believe that most people have that in them. I’m not a brilliant creative genius, but I
do have a certain vision that I am very tenacious about going after and I’m willing to sacrifice
for that. That’s my strength. I’m Joel Grimes, and I am an artist.

    Happy he's doing it…
I never understood photographers who try to copy others.
Joel Grimes has this style nailed down, that's his contribution to the world.
I respect and appreciate it, completely.
